Pets: Latest Casualties of Foreclosure
Animal shelters have been experiencing an increase in activity these past months as numerous distressed homeowners in the brink of foreclosure decide to give up their pets. According to the American Humane Association, there is a possibility that about 1 million pets will be given by their homeowners by the end of this year considering that the foreclosure crisis could affect approximately 4 million homes.
Some homeowners who lost their home to foreclosure would like to keep their pets but the apartments they moved into have no-animal policies. Most of them no longer have the money to spare for their pet’s food in addition to healthcare. Old pets require medical attention and with the financial problems, their owners can no longer prioritize their needs.
Sadly, many homeowners do not realize that they have to give up their pets until too late. Usually, foreclosure counselors are the ones who make the suggestion after explaining to the owners how much it would cost them to feed and care for their pets. Because of this, there is little time left for the owners to make arrangements and they end up abandoning their pets in a shelter or worse, leave them at their home.
According to various animal groups, the growing trend is becoming alarming. In addition, the slowing economy is also making people think twice about getting pets, resulting to overcrowding in these shelter homes. Some of these shelters are even offering these animals as donation.
Pet owners should remember that leaving their pets at home could make them face legal charges under the Cruelty against Animal Law. If you are about to lose your home to foreclosure, you will have to make an effort to make arrangements for your pet. Even if you may have lost everything, it is still important to do the proper thing for your beloved pets.
